With the economic and social development, the market demand in electronics, medicine, automobile, new energy and so on has further risen, promoting the development of global chemical industry towards refinement. As future chemical industry will be characterized by green and high end, it is foreseeable that global fine chemicals market will grow rapidly.
Recently, the ranking event of “Top 50 Competitiveness Enterprises in Global Fine Chemicals Industry 2022”, held by Fine Chemicals Information Institute, is aimed to promote the healthy and sustainable development of global fine chemicals industry by continuously monitoring the current situation and changing trends of the competitiveness of enterprises, and further studying the performance and shaping factors of competitiveness.
After the evaluation and review of assessing panels, the winners finally listed in the Rankings of Top 50 Competitiveness Enterprises in Global Fine Chemicals Industry 2022 are BASF, Dow, Covestro, Syngenta, Corteva Agriscience, PPG, Sinochem International, Nutrien, Bayer, DSM, Henkel, IFF, 3M, Arkema, Evonik Industries, AkzoNobel, Huntsman, Waker Chemie AG, Solvay, Givaudan, ICL-IP, Mosaic, Yara, Eastman Chemical, Wanhua Chemical, Lanxess, SABIC, Ecolab, Celanese, Sumitomo Chemical, Chemours, CPChem, FMC, Indorama, Sherwin-Williams, DuPont, Lonza, RPM, Sasol, Symrise, Clariant, Imerys, Mitsui Chemicals, Mitsubishi Chemical, Avient, Lubrizol, Johnson Matthey, Albemarle, Asahi Kasei, DIC.
In terms of countries, the selected enterprises are from the United States (20 enterprises), Germany (8), Japan (5), China (3), the Netherlands, Switzerland and France (2 for each), Canada, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Norway, Israel, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and South Africa (1 for each) . The United States has the largest number of enterprises on the list, accounting for 40%, followed by Germany, 16% and Japan, 10%. This reflects the current competitive landscape that North America, Western Europe and Japan are the leading regions in the fine chemicals industry with the proportion of fine chemical production process in chemical industry of 60-70%, and there is much room for China to improve its proportion.

We found that despite of the weak recovery of international economy, blocked industrial chain, rising price of raw materials and international crude oil in 2021, which brought great uncertainty to the fine industry, generally speaking, the leading fine chemical enterprises still made extraordinary achievements. On the one hand, fine chemicals feature a wide range of application, high-added value, and short circle of product innovation. On the other hand, the outstanding fine chemical enterprises, boasting rich chemical production experience and strong technical and scientific force, practice the value of sustainable development and pursue circular economy, which is in line with the trend of the times.

As shown in Figure 2, we can see more vividly that the competitiveness index trend of Top 50 competitiveness enterprises in global fine chemicals 2022 presents a near “L” shape. BASF, the leader of the chemical industry, ranks first with absolute advantage, forming a gap of 1.5765 with the second place in competitiveness index. The values of Dow and Covestro are similar, forming a relatively significant advantage with the latter enterprises. And the trend of gentle lines shows the fierce competition among enterprises.
As an important field of the petrochemical industry, fine chemicals industry will usher in a bright future as the demand for new energy chemicals, chemical synthetic materials, composite materials, functional chemicals, life science products and other products will increase significantly in the future. We believe that the comprehensive evaluation of fine chemical enterprises will help to improve their core competitiveness and promote the quality development of the industry.
